Die Erdnationen befinden sich im Krieg mit PLANT, einer Rasse von genetisch verbesserten Menschen (genannt den Coordinators), die in zahlreichen gigantischen künstlichen Kolonien in der Mondumlaufbahn leben. Zu dem Krieg kam es, nachdem Anhänger einer Coordinator-Feindlichen Gruppe namens Blue Cosmos eine der Kolonien durch einen Atomangriff zerstörten, wodurch 280.000 Menschen starben.
